Kitty unlocked the white door into her apartment that she nicknamed Middle Earth. She sighed when she went in and turned on the lights. She enjoyed helping out these kids, but some times it could just be a big pain in the ass. Some kids just almost hit her for giving them their pills or medicine. She unbuttoned her blouse and set her stuff down on the kitchen table. She tossed her keys and I.D. as she was walking past the tiny table next to the small couch and walked into the bedroom to put something comfy on. She changed out of the white and black striped shirt and into a Snoopy tank top and out of her black work pants into the Woodstock shorts that went with the tank. She slipped off the black socks and into her blue monster socks. She was already feeling more comfy.
She walked out of the bedroom and then began to tidy up a little bit around the place from the things that she had tossed on the table. She gathered up the papers that had fallen out of the bag and she put it on the hook, and then she grabbed her keys and I.D. and hung them up as well. She went into the kitchen and put on some hot water for tea. Until then, she grabbed a bottle of water and then went in the small living room to watch some television before going to bed. She looked over at the pet gecko, Gadget, and saw him climbing all over the small tank. He jumped from one log to a rock back over to the log. Someone was hyper tonight.
When the tea pot went off, it startled her. She jumped up off the couch and then ran over to the pot. She put it on a different top and then she thought she heard knocking at her door. She kind of blew it off and continued making her tea. She got out her penguin mug and a peppermint tea bag from the cabinet. She poured the boiling hot water in the mug and then let it sit for about two minutes. She brought the cup up to her nose and inhaled the aroma of the nice peppermint; that cleared her sinuses right away. She kind of jumped when she heard the knock once again. Okay, well, maybe there was someone at the door. She dragged her feet across the carpeted floor and then slowly opened the door.

when the devil wants to dance with you ,YOU BETTER SAY NEVER because a dance with the devil might last you forever - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thoughts flooded James's mind as he walked home. Or, well, what could be referred to as his home at the moment. His staff apartment was small and cozy and held just enough space for James and his dog, Rufus, but he couldn't imagine calling the place home. It just didn't fit into his description of what he wanted his home to look like. A big, warm two-bedroom house with a small pool in the backyard. Now that was the house he'd dreamed of having since young adulthood.
What he wanted in a home didn't exactly matter at the moment, though. He was working at the Reflection Ranch, helping kids. He was glad that he didn't have to commute more than ten minutes to his work everyday, but sometimes he couldn't help but dream...
Anyway, what he was mostly concerned with on this lovely night was a certain set of forms that he needed to fill out by next Monday. He would have already finished them by now, but he'd sort of misplaced a paper that had some information on it that he needed to include in the forms. He'd looked for the paper everywhere at the school - in his office, in his classroom. Hell, he'd even checked the cafeteria. But all of his efforts were in vain and he still had yet to find the stupid paper.
Now he was off to his apartment to check there - and hope that Rufus hadn't found it - but he wasn't sure what he would do if he couldn't find it. After his apartment, there were almost no options left. Where was the last place he'd seen the paper? Had he put it somewhere stupid like he did with a lot of other things? (One time he'd placed a gift card in a book in an attempt to remind himself to go shopping.)
A book! That was it! He'd put the paper inside one of his books! But...which one? He didn't have enough time to look through all of them. He had to plan for his classes and, well, actually teach his classes.
Okay, well, it has to be in a book that I've opened recently, he told himself. What was the last book I opened?
He thought about it, and somehow just thinking about it reminded him of exactly which book the paper was in. And then he remembered who had it. Crap, he muttered. He was already at the staff apartment complex and he didn't even know if Kaitlyn was home. I suppose I could go see...
And that was how James found himself at the blonde nurse's door. Now, this wasn't a problem considering the two had become fairly close over the years they'd been working together at the ranch. The problem was that he'd never been to her apartment before. And he kind of thought she was cute. And funny. And...
This is not the time to think about that, he decided, knocking on the door. He just had to get the paper and leave. He didn't have to stick around and get himself all worked up for nothing. She probably didn't even look at him that way. No, they were just friends. And besides, he liked being friends with Kaitlyn. She reminded him of his fresh-outta-college days - good times.
Where is she? he asked himself. Maybe she was still at the school. He tried again just in case. If she didn't answer this time, he'd just ask her about it tomorrow. To his surprise, though, the door opened, and before him stood the blonde in question.
"Hey," he greeted. "Sorry to show up so late, but you remember that book I lent you the other day? I left something inside of it that I need."

The curly headed blond opened the door a little to see a familiar face, and then opened it the rest of the way. It had been the English teacher, James Dawson. He looked like he had just run all over the place looking for something or someone. He was still in his suit from teaching his class today, so he probably must have stayed late at the school for maybe a meeting or something. He had curly-ish brown hair and deep dark brown eyes that tended to suck someone right in. He was cute. She couldn't deny him that. They had been friends since they had met here on day one. They had been relatively close to one another, almost like best friends. However, Kaitlyn liked him a little more than that. Alas, she did not want to try and ruin her friendship with him so she kept it to herself.
James had mentioned that the book he lent her had something important in it, "It's fine. And yeah." She started to walk the other way and thought that he might want to come in instead of just standing out in the hallway, "You can come in if you'd like. Just shut the door on the way in." She set her penguin mug down on the small table in front of the couch and looked on her bookshelf for the book. She twisted her head to the side trying to remember where she might have put it. She kind of ran off into her room to look on the bedside. Yep. There it was. She didn't want to go looking for said item because that might put her at being nosy, so she just brought the whole book out to him.
She walked out of her room and closed the door, not wanting him to accidentally see the messy room. She walked over to him, "I believe this is the book you were talking about." After handing him the book, she got her tea and finally took a drink of it. She made a sigh of relief and looked back to see if James had recovered what he had misplaced in the book, "Did you find it?" She had hoped that it didn't accidentally fell out when he had handed the book off to her; she would feel really bad. When she saw him at the door, he looked worried, so the piece of paper must have been very important.
Kitty walked into her kitchen to grab a snack food of some kind. "Would you like something to drink or snack on?" she had asked him. She had never really had anyone over to her small apartment before, so this whole host thing was new to her. Even if he was here for a piece of paper, she should still offer hospitality, right? She opened the small fridge and saw water, soda, and orange juice. At least there was a slight variety. She moved on to the freezer and saw pizza rolls. Snack. She turned the over on pre-heat and got out a pan for the pizza rolls. There weren't too many left, so she just dumped the rest of the box on the steel pan. She counted a total of fourteen. If James were to stay, they could each have seven. "Do you like pizza rolls?" she kind of jokingly asked him.

when the devil wants to dance with you ,YOU BETTER SAY NEVER because a dance with the devil might last you forever - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - James watched as Kaitlyn walked back into her apartment, unsure as to whether or not it would be a good idea to follow her. They'd been practically attached at the hip for a while now, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad...but, still, he didn't want to overstep boundaries. And he had to get back to his apartment to finish up work anyway.
And then, as if she could read his mind, she invited him in. James was a little shocked, a little unsure. He shrugged it off quickly, though, and stepped inside, closing the door behind him. The feeling of being somewhere new surrounded him. Her apartment was just as cozy as his was, but significantly neater. He wasn't surprised - James had never really been someone known for neatness. It wasn't so bad that he left dirty clothes and old food everywhere, he just left books and papers and other things here and there.
He lingered in the area by the door, waiting for Kaitlyn to return with the book. He'd never been good at coming into another person's home for the first time. It was always something he approached carefully. If you overestimated your welcome, you could easily offend the other person and Kaitlyn was one person that James really didn't want to offend. If he even could...
When she walked back into the room, he noticed what she was wearing. A pyjama set with a Snoopy shirt and Woodstock shorts. He smiled. What a blast from the past. He had to admit, she looked pretty cute in that outfit. Kaitlyn handed him the book and he flipped quickly through the pages.
"Aha!" he said, retrieving the paper he had spent so much time looking for. He would have handed the book back to her, but Kaitlyn had moved to the kitchen. He followed, setting the book on the countertop and sighed, shaking his head. "The trouble one piece of paper can get you into."
She offered him a snack, and he paused, wondering if that was a good idea. "I wouldn't..." want to impose... James pointed his thumb behind him with, "I should probably..." get going... But, looking around, looking at Kaitlyn, he realized he didn't really spend enough time with her as it stood, and what was one night of relaxation? Even if he wasn't planning on making any moves, it would still be nice. Besides, those stupid forms weren't due 'till Monday.
"...I haven't had a pizza roll in a while," he said with a smile, moving further into the kitchen. He loosened his tie a little bit and, somewhat unexpectedly, even to himself, he said, "Cute pyjamas by the way."

James seemed hesitant to coming in, only lingering by the doorway really. When she walked back into the room a to hand him the book, he had smiled. She could only imagine what at. He then quickly flipped through the book and apparently found the piece of paper he had been looking for. He followed her into the kitchen area, setting the book on the table top. He then mentioned how much trouble one little piece of paper could get you in. She didn't turn around to look at him, but asked, "What is it for?" She then turned to him waiting for an answer but spoke up once again, "I mean, I know how much a slip of paper can get you in trouble and all." She flashed back to the time she punched a kid in high school. She punched the boy square in the face and knocked him out with one hit. She couldn't remember what it was for, but he was probably making fun of her or something.
His voice got her back in the real world saying things that he didn't finish. James was a nice guy and probably had papers to grade and was trying to find the words to say that he couldn't or shouldn't stay. However, she got a slight bit of hope when he started to look around and his face formed a smile while saying that he hadn't had pizza rolls in awhile. Kaitlyn smiled, "Well you've been missing out for that while then." The pre-heat on the oven went off and she slid the pan in and set the timer for ten minutes. You could cook pizza rolls in a microwave as well, but she didn't think they tasted as good when cooked in an oven.
He then commented on her pajamas. She closed her eyes, smiled, and bit her lip. She kind of chuckled a little bit to herself before finally responding, "Why thank you. And yours are very fancy." She smiled at her joking ways. She then noticed that he loosened his tie. She tried not making a huge deal of it, but she'd never seen the guy loose his appearance no matter what he was doing or where he was. She got a hope inside of her that maybe he was feeling comfortable around her. However, with James a person could never know. He might act one way, but it could mean the complete opposite. She wished he knew what he was thinking sometimes. She just kind of wanted to give the whole relationship thing a shot. Maybe he would be okay with it, but maybe it could ruin everything that they'd built a relationship with up to this point. She would just sit and wait.
She took a seat at the table, "So, what has the English teacher been up to recently?" The two hadn't talked for a while, well, a hi here and there, but not a full out conversation like they had used to.

when the devil wants to dance with you ,YOU BETTER SAY NEVER because a dance with the devil might last you forever - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Oh, you know," he replied with a playful shrug, placing the paper neatly into his tote briefcase. "I've just got some paperwork to fill out." The paperwork was actually more important to him than he was leading Kaitlyn on. While he, and most of the known planet, didn't really enjoy the act of filling out stacks and stacks of paperwork, this at least was going toward a good cause. He was applying to get these kids - well, at least the seniors - who, despite having issues, excelled in some way or another special scholarships. Because of what they went through, James knew some of these kids would never be offered what other students competed for.
Kaitlyn set the pan of pizza rolls into the oven just as James felt his stomach growl. Well, that certainly justified his staying here even more. He rubbed his tummy and said, "I suppose I have, living off ramen and macaroni and cheese." James didn't really have the time to cook and usually just settled for something quick and easy. Usually he made himself a sandwich and chips, but sometimes he craved a home-cooked meal like the ones his mother made back when he was still living at home. He wasn't exactly the best cook, though, and he didn't have the time to learn, so he wasn't left with many options for meals.
He wondered if Kaitlyn knew how to cook full meals. She was young, sure, but he'd met plenty of young people who knew their way around the kitchen. Maybe she was one of those people who cooked in what felt comfortable, like those pyjamas she was wearing. In fact, she'd probably look cute in an apron...
"Why thank you. And yours are very fancy."
My what...? he wondered, looking down at his outfit. He wasn't wearing any py - oh. She was making a joke. James smiled and asked, "Do I really seem like the kind of guy who would sleep in his suit?" He thought about it, quickly deciding that maybe he should fix that statement. "Okay, so I have, but I don't normally. And I definitely take off this tie whenever I can get the chance," he laughed.
He followed her to the table, taking the seat across from her. It was a cute table, and he thought it was probably a good one for drinking coffee at in the morning. A glimpse of that perfect house he'd always dreamed of flittered through his mind. Yeah, there'd be a table like this there.
"Me? Oh, nothing new really," he replied. "Grading papers, teaching classes, hoping I don't get killed - same ol', same ol'." He didn't to be impolite, and he was also geniuinely curious since it had been some time since the last time the two of them had talked like this, so he asked her, "And yourself? I'm sure as a nurse you have some funny stories." James could only imagine what could have happened as he waited for her response.

He started out with "oh you know" and then did a cute shoulder shrug deal and said that it was just some paperwork. Kaitlyn was skeptical of how much this paperwork was not as important than he was leading it on to be. "Oh. Sounds fun." Paperwork was never fun to do. And another question popped in her head that she would keep to herself: if the paperwork wasn't too important, than why couldn't it wait til morning to get? Was it actually really important or did he want to see her? Either way, he was here now, so a win-win for her she guessed. "Paperwork must be super fun to fill out, right?" Kaitlyn had to fill out paperwork, but that was when she just started. After a month or so, she had no more papers to fill out. However, there was on occasion the one kid that tried to hurt her that she had to fill out paperwork for, but that rarely happened anymore.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him rub his stomach and she kind of chuckled a little. He mentioned only eating ramen and macaroni and cheese, "So, living off a college kid diet are we?" Being a nurse, she knew that it wasn't healthy to just eat crap for so long. "You should come over more. I can actually cook things." Of course, she didn't cook four course meals. She could make some sandwhiches, pasta, and other simple things. Of course, she had packaged food around here as well because sometimes she had to get a quick bite to eat and get out. Hot pockets were held in the freezer as well as chips and what not in cabinets. She wished she had a lot of time to actually cook. She picked up on some cooking methods from her father, watching him in the kitchen.
When she said that his "pajamas" were fancy, he looked confused and looked down at himself, wondering what she meant by it. When he smiled, she couldn't help but laugh. He then asked if he looked like the type to actually sleep in a suit. Before she got a chance to speak, he said that he had, but not often. He mentioned taking off the tie whenever he could. "Well, take off your tie then," she said joking around. She'd never seen him be relaxed because he was always so on top of things.
He went with her to the table and took a seat from across her. He answered her question by saying nothing new. Just grading papers, teaching classes, and hoping not to get killed. She kind of gave him a half smile, "Well, I don't think that anyone would try and harm you. More likely a doctor or therapist." She didn't want to mention nurses because she didn't want him to worry about her. He asked about herself, commenting on how she might have funny stories. "Well, just distributing out meds to these kids. Some of them even talk to me about their lives, explaining siblings or parents if they feel comfy around me. I kind of almost feel honored that some of these kids open up to me." Most of the time she just gave the meds and left the room.

when the devil wants to dance with you ,YOU BETTER SAY NEVER because a dance with the devil might last you forever - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Paperwork must be super fun to fill out, right?" she asked, and James couldn't help but laugh. Kaitlyn was just as light-hearted as always. That was such a refreshing trait to have, especially considering where they worked.
"You know, the first person who tells me truthfully that they love filling out paperwork, well, I'm going to give them all the stacks they can handle," he replied. James knew that working anywhere required some kind of paperwork to be filled out, but he could sometimes be overwhelmed by how much he kept getting from the ranch. It was as if each new student had their own stack of paperwork, and he was required to read something ridiculous just so they could have his signature.
His attention was averted back to food when she chided him for his college diet. He scratched the back of his head, a little guilty for it, but what could he do? It wasn't like he had the time to cook, let alone eat for that matter. "Yeah, I wish I knew how to cook sometimes, but it's not all bad."
He could tell Kaitlyn didn't condone eating the junk he did all the time. She was a nurse after all. That was only to be expected. He didn't, however, expect for her to invite him over to eat more often. James looked up in surprise, unsure of what to say, his mouth hanging open. He realized that he probably looked like an idiot and closed it, thinking of the proper way to decline.
"I...wouldn't want to make you uncomfortable..." God, he sounded like an idiot, didn't he? If she was uncomfortable, she wouldn't have let him into her apartment in the first place, right? And it wasn't like he didn't want to be here. He decided he should probably restate that, make it sound better. "I mean, if you really want to then..." James trailed off, hoping she'd cut him off or finish the thought for him.
He proceeded to do just what she suggested and take off his tie. The action made him considerably more relaxed and he fell into listening to Kaitlyn talk about her patients. She reassured him that he would probably be less likely to be killed than a doctor or therapist, and he nodded his agreement. It had been a stupid joke anyway. James also noted how she avoided the word "nurse" even though he knew she was probably just as likely to get hurt as a doctor. He didn't mention it.
"You're lucky, Kaitlyn," he said instead. "To the kids, I'm pretty much just that boring English teacher. None of them really talk to me much," he sighed. "I just want to know if I'm getting through to them at all..."
